Fantastic Dictionary and Flash Card Program
SmartDict Chinese has become a staple app for me. Top 10 things I liked: 1. It seems to work better with the iPhone Chinese input method than the stock Notepad app. SmartDict seems to pull up the correct words more often than Notepad. I dont understand how or why, but it is better at interpreting the input. Odd but useful. 2. You can switch the dictionary from Traditional to Simplified Characters from inside the application (under "settings"). 3. The flash cards are a big bonus!! You can quickly build your own study lists from the dictionary entries. I bought a whole other app just to do this. 4. You can search for entries in English, Pinyin, Traditional Characters or Simplified Characters. 5. Navigation is simple and pretty obvious. 6. In the screen showing the full entry for a word you can tap on any part of the entry and copy it to the clipboard. I use this all the time to copy a character to Notepad (esp. when Notepad doesnt recognize my attempt to input the character). 7. Contains words, compound words and phrases/idioms. 8. Phrase entries have cross-lists to the phrases words. 9. Lists measure words in noun entries. 10. All this for FREE!! Two things that made me buy the full app: 1. These guys just deserved to get paid, the app is so perfectly useful. 2. The wordlists/flashcards are limited to 10 words per list. What Id like to see in the next version 1. A button to switch from Traditional to Simplified (on the main search screen and on the screen with the word entry). Going into the settings is a bit of a way to go. For my use I often want to switch back and forth to compare the Simplified and Traditional Characters. 2. Some sort of alert telling you at all times if you are looking at Simplified or Traditional Characters - a symbol in the corner? A different color background? 3. One of the best
This is one of the best iphone Chinese English translation apps that I used. It is very flexible and especially no wifi connection is required. Very happy with it.
